Medical Health Being Neglected

September 29, 2010

Globally, many people are fighting a losing battle for affordable health care. Third world countries are striving hard to provide their citizens with basic health care programs that are freely offered elsewhere. At a time when health care issues are being turned into corporate industry issues, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for the common man to obtain affordable health care for himself and his family.

Since health care is currently under close scrutiny, cases of medical negligence that result in the death of a patient are being highlighted. It’s shocking to witness such acts of carelessness, yet families of the victims are sidelined and ignored when it comes to compensation. One of the very recent cases that come to mind is that of a woman in Baltimore who was paralyzed from the waist down after inappropriate grafting procedures. She took her case to court and with the help of prominent Baltimore medical malpractice attorneys, won the case and was awarded $3.5 million in compensation.

Though the woman in question was given compensation, not many other victims are as lucky. Many people are not aware of their rights and are clueless when incidences such as negligence take place in a medical setting. Many others, though they go to court, are not fortunate enough to receive compensation from the opposing party.

Though medical negligence cases are few and far between, they still occur globally on a regular basis. Whether laws are set to strictly punish offenders or are made more victim friendly, a solution is needed. Many doctors and nurses, thanks to their insurance, walk away free while families of the victims are left to suffer inconsolably. To lose a life over something  trivial like administering the wrong dose of medicine or mistakenly interchanging tubes that carry medicines and liquid food, is heart wrenching. People deserve better and it’s time the government takes serious action against the offenders.
