Moving Tips
Moving can be an exciting process. The idea of living in a new neighborhood, meeting new people, and starting fresh can be very appealing. Unfortunately, it can be a stressful (and strenuous, with all that heavy lifting) process. Depending on the simplicity and how easy it is to maneuver furniture through doorways, it can be downright frustrating. After helping a friend move to a new house last weekend, I wanted to share some tips and ideas on how to streamline moving to make it an overall better experience instead of a day filled with sweat and frustration.
1) Declutter and organize as much as possible before boxing items. While many people box items based on the room they belong in, it is a good idea to further categorize belongings. That box labeled “Kitchen” could have silverware, pans, or even canned food. Without opening it, there’s no way to be sure.
2) Donate items to charity for tax write offs. This is a difficult thing to do when moving, because people tend to be packrats. Even if something was stored in the attic for ten years without use, upon discovery it becomes something that you simply cannot live without. Donating such items benefits the mover in a few ways. It is going toward a good cause, so it provides a feeling of generosity and happiness. Occasionally these donations can even provide a tax write off. Further money is saved when actually moving – less space is needed, so a smaller moving truck could be used.
3) Research potential moving companies. There are tons of moving companies that are ready to assist you, for the right price. Determine what you need, whether it is temporary storage, international moving, or simply good customer service.
