Protect your Child from Colds and Flu

September 29, 2010

When children head back to school we know that cold and flu season is just around the corner. Since we cannot keep our children away from germs, we can try and prevent as many winter colds as we can by teaching our kids some basic skills they can do so they do not get sick.

The first thing to teach your child is to wash their hands. They need to be taught to wash their hands front and back, with soap, from their wrists to their fingertips for 20 seconds. If soap is not available, you may want to purchase hand sanitizer for your child to take to school in their backpack.

Teaching children to keep their hands away from their mouth and eyes will help reduce the number of colds. Many germs are spread from children putting their hands in their mouth.

Children should wear jackets on cold days and keep their shoes dry on wet and rainy days.

”’Eating Healthy”’
Children should eat healthy. Whole grains, fresh fruit, and vegetables will help maintain a healthy lifestyle for your child. For healthy after school snacks, cut up carrots, celery, and cucumbers and serve with a dipping sauce. Store the veggies in easy to open containers in the refrigerator so your child can reach in the refrigerator and grab a couple of veggies when they need a quick pick me up.

If you have fresh fruit and veggies available, your child will learn to reach for these items for an afternoon snack instead of cookies.

Make sure child gets enough sleep and ask your pediatrician about giving your child a vitamin especially during the cold and flu season. A vitamin may keep you from having to purchase pharmaceutical drugs as often if you child can stay healthier during the cold or flu season.
