Planning for My Son’s Perfect Future

September 29, 2010

Yesterday I had to make a quick trip to the mall to pick up some new socks for my husband. As I entered the mall, I realized I had parked on the wrong side and would now have quite a hike to get to the store I had come to visit.

As I walked past the various kiosks in the center of the mall walkway, I was amazed at the variety of things people sell. There were cell phone covers, headbands for babies, skin cream, hair pieces, and smokeless cigarettes. I wondered if the people who owned these small businesses were satisfied and if this was the future they had envisioned for themselves. It made me think of my young son and what I am doing now to help him prepare for his future; a future I hope will be filled with happiness.

After I put him to bed, I sat down with my husband and we began a list of things we need to do with and for our son to ensure his future success. I thought I would share it with you.

We will faithfully do the following:
•Read to our son every day or have him read to us
•Start a college savings account and add to it regularly, even if the sum is small
•Encourage him to explore new hobbies and interests
•Teach him the value of work
•Spend time talking together and really listen to what he says
•Be involved in his school activities
•Create an environment that fosters his curiosity about the world
•Eat meals together as a family whenever possible

My husband and I are excited about the goals we have set and feel they will make a huge difference in our son’s life. We are excited for him and for his future.
