Food and Water, Shelter, and Clothing

November 27, 2010

There are some basics that we all need. Maybe some of them shouldn’t be considered essentials, but they are things that will make our lives more comfortable.

Food and water. When talking about the essentials of life, having sustenance is important. Though we can all go for a short time without food or water, they are our life force. No one can go too long without either. Obviously, we would all like the quality and quantity of these to be as good as possible. Unfortunately, they are not always in easy reach for everyone. Many people die each year from dehydration and/or starvation.

Decent clothing. Though this is not necessarily something that we absolutely need, it is seen as a societal must. Depending on where you live, you may need different types of clothing. For example, those in Egypt require a different clothing style than those in Minnesota. If you are liable to freeze to death when it gets cold, it becomes much more necessary to have warm clothes.

Shelter. Again, we can survive without shelter. People have done it for generations and, in fact, still do. But having a place to live, to keep you from the elements, is something that helps a person feel a little more comfortable in their lives. The shelter does not have to be large, or perfect. Having somewhere to go to help keep you from the cold, the rain, and the burning sun is what is important when talking about shelter.
Unfortunately, many people in the world lack these basics. Others thrive, having all these resources at hand, and taking them for granted. Wouldn’t the world be a much better place if these three things were provided for everyone?
